For way too many years, I lived in a viscous spiral of restricting and over-indulging. I would restrict my food and grind my body in the gym to validate being gluttonous later. After over-indulging, I'd feel guilty, and punish myself with that same restriction and extreme physical exertion. Not only did this pattern wreak havoc on my physical body, it also had a huge negative impact on my emotional wellbeing.
I didn't even realize how wrong it all was until an"ah-ha" moment during my yoga teacher training. We were halfway through a 5-minute-long expression of chair pose. My legs were shaking, I was holding my breath, and the thoughts going through my head sounded something like, "How much longer are we here? This is torture. How am I going to make it through?" All of a sudden, the leading instructor's voice interjected with a question: "Can you be kind to yourself here?"
Wow. It was something I never considered. Right then and there, I began to shift my perspective. I made my breaths deep and fluid. I imagined myself inhaling love, peace, and bliss, sending nourishment to every cell of my body, and exhaling tension, negativity – anything that didn't serve me.
Instantly, the way I felt in my body changed. I felt hugged from the inside-out, cleansed, and rejuvenated. All 30+ trillion cells in my body were smiling, vibrating with sheer joy and love, and just like that, it was as if I could stay in that challenging chair pose forever.
One powerful question shifted my perspective in a way that completely refreshed my outlook on life. In being kind to, loving, and seeing the beauty in myself, I grew confident and, for the first time since I was very young, comfortable in my own skin.
As I continue to live in this way, my mind's chatter grows less and less. I accept my imperfections with love and kindness, and instead of punishing myself when they bubble up, I implement extra nourishment and self care – kind of like telling myself, "It's all good, I love you anyway."
Now, I live freely in alignment with my authenticity, and it feels amazing. My mission is to help others feel amazing in their bodies, so that they too can live their missions and get the same natural high from life that I experience every day.
Mother Theresa said, "I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters and create many ripples." Imagine the world we'd live in if everyone was living their true purpose, spreading their ripple...!
